Why is a large section in Manipur opposing Census? Explained

With the first phase of the Census scheduled to begin on September 1, training of enumerators has been halted amid protests, while civil society groups are demanding that an NRC be conducted before the Census.

The debate is linked to concerns over illegal immigration, demographic changes, displacement, future delimitation and political representation. Meanwhile, the Kuki-Zo Council has opposed the demand for postponement and called for an impartial Census.

The matter is also before the Manipur High Court, which is seeking responses from the State and Centre.

So, why does Manipur want NRC before Census? And will the Centre postpone Census 2027?

Watch the full explainer to understand the controversy.
